Character information
Name: Dorian Pavus
Age: 30
Date of Birth: August 25th, 1986
Canon: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Species: Witch
Role: Staunch advocator for Circle Midnight and black magic practices - only against controlling the will of others. Come to London on a transfer to King’s College from Milan - supports himself off academic work while working on his PhD.
Rank: Level 1-2

Background:
Dorian was born into a wealthy home and a bloodline that prided magical ability over everything else. In Italy, dark magic isn’t forbidden or so much as frowned upon. It’s simply more magic to control and master - which is certainly how he was brought up to think about spells and witchcraft. But even his family had some lines that - while they weren’t hard - were not encouraged to cross. Magic that took away a person’s free will was not exactly kosher. Trading with fae or taking advantage of them was less offensive but should a witch need their services it made them look like a weakling greedily snatching power.

Dorian was trained in many Circles, always managing to start fights and be kicked out. Eventually, his father chose a private tutor for him; a master of the craft: Gereon Alexius. As his apprentice, Dorian learned dark and arcane arts as well as light. Alexius believed that a well rounded witch should have mastery of all the art forms no matter what kind they would be. Dorian also pursued a human education at the same time, studying mythology and going so far as to become a graduate student at the University of Milan. Eventually, due to a difference of opinion on Circle Midnight and the level of power it had versus Circle Daybreak in the rest of the world, Dorian left Alexius' tutelage.

Dorian's father pressured him to seek a woman to marry - even going so far as to arrange one for him. To his father's dismay, Dorian refused every girl he was introduced to - not interested in continuing the Pavus bloodline at a detriment to who he was as a person. Eventually, his father turned to a Fae for assistance in altering Dorian's preferences and personality in an attempt to force him into marriage. Unfortunately for him, Dorian discovered this plot and left home - transferring to King's College to begin working on his PhD and refusing to speak to his father again. In a bid to make Dorian come back, his father disowned him and continues to try and bring him back home by forcible means to this day.

Personality:
Dorian is brilliant, beautiful and an amazingly talented witch - and he knows it. Being able to back up his arrogance with skill and looks should mean that Dorian doesn’t have many self esteem issues, and he’d prefer no one think otherwise. While he is truly confident in himself and his abilities, Dorian has developed this as a means of hiding the hurt he carries from his family and mentor figures.

As an avid academic and student of learning, Dorian is enthusiastic about everything he cares to learn about. He can go on for hours about a subject he’s passionate about - whether in favor or against a specific opinion. He can be quite ill-tempered about many things, as he is easily irritated and snappish towards others - extending to those he cares about. No one is safe from his ire should it rise.

Dorian abhors small-minded people, and is not afraid to mock them for their apparent idiocy no matter how dangerous it may be for him. That sort of thinking and behavior is highly present in his own family and home and because he thinks that they could do better, willful ignorance - or at least what he defines as ignorance - is intolerable.

However with all of his airs and superiority, Dorian is a disappointment to his family due in large part to his sexuality and his combative personality. And his family, in turn, disappoints Dorian due to their politics and what his father tried to do to him. Their lack of approval is something that weighs on him heavily but it has become a norm to the point that he brushes it off, giving off the idea that he enjoys being the underdog as it gives him a moral superiority - which is something Dorian uses to his advantage.

At the end of the day, Dorian is an idealist. In his own canon, he believes in the Tevinter Imperium; in the good it could do despite a blood soaked and troubled history. The same is true as a translation into this AU; Dorian believes in making black and white magic equal players and contributing to that fight if he can.
